2nd lawsuit filed against Glade Run

Sexual abuse suit similar to others

Lawsuits against a Zelienople youth services program continue to be filed, with a second suit alleging sexual abuse.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in Allegheny County. The suit's documents relate a story that is similar to two other suits against the facility, one of which was settled at the end of 2018. Similar to the other two cases, this new one named Glade Run Lutheran Services, Glade Run Lutheran Services Corp. and Charles Lockwood, Glade Run's former president and CEO, as defendants.

The new case relates to sexual assaults against a 13-year-old boy between March 1 and May 31, 2012, during which time the suit alleges that Glade Run staff members failed to protect the victim and instead punished him by making the child stand outside his room for 12-hour stretches and had him clean human waste from other residents stuck on the walls. The boy is now 19 years old.

Mike Pisanchyn, a lawyer who filed the lawsuit on the plaintiff's behalf, said in a prepared statement that recent media attention emboldened other victims to report abuse they allegedly experienced under the care of Glade Run. The suit comes on the heels of another one that was filed by Pisanchyn about two weeks ago. In that one, the facility allegedly allowed sexual assault to take place in 2014 between the youth residents. And the settled lawsuit focused on alleged events between January and March 2015.

“It seems as more children and their families speak out and show they will not be intimidated to be made silent, it gives other children and their families more courage to stand up and come forward,” Pisanchyn said in the statement.

The lawsuit alleges that along with allowing the abuse to happen, staff members with the facility were untrained to deal with adolescents, such as the 13-year-old boy in this case, who had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Asperger's disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

In 2015, Zelienople borough police investigated allegations of sexual activity between residents at the Glade Run Lutheran Services facility that housed more than 90 youths at the time, police officials said in previous reports. The facility no longer serves as a residence for youths, according to Steven Green, who was hired as CEO about six months ago.

Pisanchyn noted in his announcement that another lawsuit will soon be filed against Glade Run.
