Strong winds cause scattered power outages

The West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department was called to help when a tree fell onto wires, toppling power lines and snapping a utility pole on Grubb Road in Cherry Township about 7:30 a.m. Friday. The road was closed until West Penn Power and other utility crews made their repairs.

Mother Nature showed Butler County who's boss Friday as gusty winds and the rain-soaked earth caused headaches for police and emergency crews.

A minor power outage was caused around 7:30 a.m., authorities said, when a wind-swept tree fell onto wires in Cherry Township. The fallen tree toppled the wires and snapped a utility pole.

Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department said electrical lines as well as cable and telephone lines and the pole were downed across Grubb Road, which is south of Branchton Road.

West Penn Power, Armstrong Cable and CenturyLink crews were notified.

The West Penn Power website showed more than 1,000 customers lost their electrical service before it was eventually restored.

Among other similar incidents, power lines were knocked down around 6 a.m. on Love Road near Monks Road in Middlesex Township.

A reported rock slide closed one lane on West Road between Valencia and Three Degree roads near the West farm in Adams Township. The rocks and debris spilled onto the road around 6 a.m., according to emergency services officials.

Adams Township police and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation responded.

“Crews were called and they had it cleaned up by around 8 a.m.,” said Mike Mattis, PennDOT's maintenance manager for Butler County.

He did not immediately have additional information. Adams Township police did not return a telephone call.

Later in the day, strong winds ripped a tree limb in Butler Township, knocking power out for about 1,400 West Penn Power customers, according to Jennifer Young, a spokeswoman for the company.

Young said there weren't any major damages to lines, but the safety systems killed the power when trees hit the wires. Maintenance crews removed the branches and flipped a breaker, restoring power.

Power was restored around 1:27 p.m., she said.

The Abie Abraham VA Health Care Center also lost power.

Ken Kalberer, a spokesman with the VA center, said the outpatient center was the only part of the hospital affected by the power outage around 1 p.m., including primary care offices, the pharmacy and other outpatient services.
