'American Royalty' at SRU looks at women in American music
SLIPPERY ROCK — An “American Royalty” show is coming to Slippery Rock University.
The “American Royalty: Queens of Sex, Soul and Song” concert by producer Neil Berg begins at 7:30 p.m. March 29 in the University Union.
The last show of the 2018-19 season of the SRU Performing Arts Series will feature Broadway, rock ' n' roll, jazz and pop music.
The artists perform the hit songs and tell the stories behind the music. The all-female cast celebrates some of the greatest female performers in American music.
Showcased will be songs by Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Carole King, Janis Joplin, Carly Simon, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Annie Lennox, Whitney Houston and Judy Garland.
The featured singers are Jeannette Bayardelle, Rita Harvey and Brook Wood.
Bayardelle has been showcased on television talk shows in addition to film work. She starred as Dionne in the revival production of “Hair” on Broadway and as Celie in “The Color Purple.”
Harvey performed the role of Hodel in the Broadway revival of “Fiddler on the Roof.” She made her Broadway debut performing the role of Christine Daae in “The Phantom of the Opera.” She also has a one-woman show, “Heart Like a Wheel: The Music of Linda Ronstadt.”
Wood most recently performed in Neil Berg's “Broadway to Barbados.”
