Slippery Rock University head responds to remarks
Slippery Rock University's president responded Saturday night to a television talk show host who disparaged the school in a magazine interview last week.
In an interview with People magazine, Dr. Phil McGraw of “Dr. Phil” fame weighed in on the nation's college admissions scandal. McGraw used SRU as an example of a school that the rich parents entangled in the scandal, which involves prominent, wealthy families making bribes in exchange for their children's admission to prestigious universities. In his mind, the involved parents were trying to avoid sending their kids to a school like SRU.
“They want to say, 'My kid's going to Harvard, my kid's going to USC or Yale.'” McGraw told People magazine. “I think it's bragging rights for them and they don't want to be the one parent that says, 'Well, yeah, my kid's going to, like, Slippery Rock.'”
SRU President William Behre penned an open letter to McGraw, which began sharing wildly on social media pages related to the university. In it, Behre uses the spotlight to outline his school's advantages.
“At affordable and accessible public colleges like Slippery Rock University, students whose parents work to pay their mortgage will find quality institutions that open doors to the American dream.”
He noted that tuition at SRU costs less than McGraw's 1957 Chevy Bel Air convertible.
“Universities like Slippery Rock University are key to social mobility in America and should be applauded for their efforts to narrow the gap betweent the haves and have-nots," he wrote.
Behre closed the letter by inviting the television star to SRU's campus in the fall.
