Restaurant owner continues family tradition
Theresa Crouse's first taste of the restaurant business was when she and her dad opened a cafe in 2014.
She had just graduated from Coastal Carolina University when they started serving up meals at Crouse's Cafe in Indiana, Pa.
“I always wanted to open one,” said Crouse, 27.
Five years later, the Kittanning native has branched out and fulfilled that dream.
She is the owner of a new restaurant in the city — the Cannella Cafe at 232 S. Main St. The restaurant, which opened in mid-April, offers breakfast and lunch all day and features a full espresso menu and a variety of pastries.
Crouse's Italian family heritage inspired the name of her restaurant. Cannella means cinnamon, which is a running theme in her restaurant, she said. People can find cinnamon throughout the menu on pancakes, pastries and drinks.
Since opening, lunch has been busy and breakfast is taking off, she said.
“Breakfast is served at any time of the day,” Crouse said.
For that morning sweet tooth craving, patrons can try the banana bread French toast, stuffed strawberry waffle and cinnamon roll pancakes.
For those looking for an egg fix, other breakfast items include a breakfast wrap and potatoes, three-meat omelet and the “Morning Start” combination, which comes with two eggs and a full order of sausage, ham or bacon and toast.
Lunch includes deli sandwiches, salads, paninis and wraps and homemade soup, she said. Steak and cheese panini, chicken Caesar wrap and strawberry chicken salad are also available.
Fresh ingredients, including vegetables and fruits, are used in the made-to-order dishes, she said.
Previously, Element Cafe occupied the space.
Main Street in Butler is busy during lunch hour, said Stan Kosciuszko, Butler County Chamber of Commerce president, and doing well compared to other towns.
“You can never have too many places to eat on Main Street,” Kosciuszko said about the new business. “People tend to gravitate to places with multiple options.”Crouse said she is pleased to be a new face on Main Street.“We are really good at breakfast,” she said. “We have experienced people here, our prices are affordable and we have quick service.”
