Ruth L. Lepley
Ruth L. Lepley, 94, of Butler passed away on Sunday at her residence.
She was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Clay Township, and was the daughter of the late Sheldon S. and Anna M. Young.
Ruth was a lifelong member of North Main Street Church of God and the Christian Women's Connection, formerly the Women's Missionary Society, where she held offices with that group.
She was a graduate of the Butler Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1949.
She worked at both Butler Hospital and also at the Veteran's Hospital (Deshon) until 1962. After that, she was a homemaker and had enjoyed gardening and making memory albums.
She is survived by one daughter, Elaine (John) Fleeger of Phoenix, Ariz.; one son, Robert L. (Julie) Lepley of Chicago, Ill.; two grandsons, Robert (Rachel) Fleeger and Tom Lepley; one granddaughter, Erin (Levi) Montaña; three great-granddaughters, Kyleigh Bruce, Aurora Fleeger and Emma Montaña; one great-grandson, Gabriel Montaña; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sweet, quiet husband, Bob, of 54 years, who was a good father and grandfather; one brother, Lamont Young; and five sisters, Velda Kerry, Lois LeViere, Elva Berline, Anna Mae Strotman and Sheldine Link.
Ruth would like to pay tribute to her wonderful Christian parents, especially her mother, who in the early 1900s, held Sunday school and church in some of the school houses north of Butler with permission granted by the school directors. She was the driving force in getting the Church of God started in Butler. The first service was on May 28, 1928, on Homewood Avenue.
Together with her son, Lamont, and the Rev. Bingham of the Presbyterian Church of Unionville, they were able to keep liquor out of Center Township by sending 419 letters to every voting resident. In the election of 1947 and 1950, the tally was 416 for dry and 169 for wet. Sheldon supported his Annie in all her endeavors. My Mother! What a gal!
Ruth said she liked to hear her Papa sing this favorite song,
“Life is like a Mountain Railroad with an engineer that's brave. We must make our life successful from the cradle to the grave. Watch the curves that fill the tunnel. Never falter, never fail. Keep your hands upon the throttle and your eyes upon the rail. Blessed Savior, thou will guide us 'til we reach that blissful shore where the angels wait to join us in our praise for evermore.”
Since 1970, Ruth had sent a Bible every month to someone in the world through the American Bible Society, which her mother did before her. Ruth was a firm believer in reading the Bible daily.

Lepley, who died Sunday, April 14, 2019.A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday at North Main Street Church of God, 1201 N.
