Judicial candidate won't move forward with recount

Jennifer Gilliland Vanasdale stands in her Butler office with petitions, some signed and others blank, that she spent the weekend trying to fill with signatures to call for a recount in Butler County's judicial race. She no longer plans on submitting the petitions.
Claims petitioners are afraid of retaliation

A judge candidate considering a recount won't move forward after all, she said, because some of the required petitioners are afraid of retaliation from her opposition.

Jennifer Gilliland Vanasdale told The Eagle on Monday that although she's collected over 100 signatures from voters, she's halting her efforts to organize a recount effort. She showed the newspaper signatures from the necessary number of voters in 19 of 89 precincts. The candidate said that some voters started contacting her yesterday with concerns about moving forward, particularly in the precinct she planned to challenge first.

“They have serious fears of retaliation,” Vanasdale said. “I find their fears to be credible. I understand why voters would be concerned.”

Further details on Vanasdale's plan and reasoning, as well as allegations that voters attested to in the petitions she decided not to file, will appear in Tuesday's Butler Eagle.
