Firefighters free teenage driver trapped in vehicle
CLAY TWP — A teenager was seriously injured Tuesday morning when the minivan he was driving collided head-on with a car on Beaver Dam Road, authorities said.
Kenneth R. Wagner Jr., 18, of Cherry Township was trapped in the vehicle and had to be rescued by volunteer firefighters.
He was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with injuries including a broken leg, according to state police. His condition was not immediately known.
Police said Wagner was traveling south around 6:25 a.m. when his Ford Windstar collided with a Dodge Avenger headed the other way on the road, which is unmarked, just south of Halston Road.
Levi J. Helms, 20, of West Sunbury, the other driver, and his passenger, Briawna Cookson, 17, of Petrolia, were able to get out on their own, and neither one was apparently injured.
Matt Wilson, chief of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department, said it took “major extrication” to get Wagner out of the minivan. Two doors and part of the roof had to be cut off the vehicle.
The teen was conscious, Wilson said, but in severe pain.
A crew from Butler Ambulance Service transported him to the Unionville fire station, where the helicopter landed and flew him for treatment.
The crash closed the road between Delu and Halston roads for a little more than an hour.
Police said their investigation continues and no traffic citations were immediately filed.
