Dr. Richard T. Martin

Dr. Richard T. Martin

Dr. Richard T. Martin, 68, of Butler passed away with his family by his side Wednesday while under the care of Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia in Cabot.

Born Sept. 3, 1950, in Cumberland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Richard M. Martin and Vera Davis Martin.

Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio State University, Richard earned his Masters and Ph.D. degrees from Kent State University.

He taught at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D., for a time before coming to Slippery Rock University, where he taught political science and retired in May of 2016 after 37 years.

Dr. Martin was especially fascinated with the Holocaust and read extensively on the subject. He and his wife, Amy, visited several concentration camps throughout Europe and he taught classes focused on the Holocaust.

Richard was an avid fly fisherman throughout Western Pennsylvania and in South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. He took pride in his nice cars and enjoyed taking rides in them. He was a master story teller. The couple loved to travel together and especially enjoyed taking along their dog, Jack. He loved his cup of coffee and reading The New York Times on Sunday mornings. Richard will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Richard leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Amy L. Martin, whom he married on July 21, 1989; his brothers, Dan Martin and his wife, Tammy, and George Martin and his wife, Joyce, both of Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
