Slippery Rock University commemorates Dr. Phil slight with shirt

Slippery Rock University releases its "Dr. Phil" response T-shirts for sale.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University students can now buy shirts to commemorate a recent slight by a TV celebrity.

The shirts are white with green lettering that read, “Yes, there is a Slippery Rock University.”

The shirt counters comments made in April by Phil McGraw of TV's “Dr. Phil.” The comment was made when McGraw was asked about the national college admissions scandal that began in March.

“The kids are leaving high school, they don't want to say, 'My kid's going to the junior college.' They want to say, 'My kid's going to Harvard, my kid's going to USC or Yale,'” McGraw said. “I think it's bragging rights for them and they don't want to be the one parent that says, 'Well, yeah, my kid's going to, you know, Slippery Rock.'”

As a result, SRU President William Behre responded with an open letter decrying the slight.

“Then, you mentioned Slippery Rock University by name as the antithesis of a trophy school,” Behre wrote. “We suspect that you didn't mean that as a compliment, but we take it as one anyway.”

McGraw later apologized to the university publicly with the excuse that he thought SRU was a school name he made up on the spot.

While apologies have been accepted, SRU has continued a campaign based on the brief battle with the talk show host.

Behre gave the shirt's free first editions to participants at this May's commencement rehearsal.

Now, the shirts are available for purchase at the SRU Bookstore or online.

Shirts are $10 with $5 from the sale of each shirt going to the SRU Class of 2019 General Student Scholarship Gift.
