Leechburg man dead after early morning Armstrong Co. motorcycle accident

GILPIN TWP, ARMSTRONG CO. — A Leechburg man died early Friday morning as the result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Armstrong County, according to police.

Ronald M. Mego, 55, of Leechburg was pronounced dead at the scene. Armstrong County Coroner Brian Meyers said in a press release that Mego died of blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

The accident occurred, according to police, while Mego was traveling north around 6:30 a.m. on River Road at a high rate of speed. Police say Mego lost control of the motorcycle in a curve, traveled off the road and made initial impact with a log, before also hitting a fire hydrant and utility pole.

Meyers said Mego was wearing a helmet when he was thrown 30 feet from the motorcycle after hitting the utility pole.

The investigation into the accident is still ongoing, and toxicology reports are pending.

State police, Gilpin Township Fire Department, Leechburg Fire Department, Leechburg Police Department, Armstrong County Sheriff's Office and Lower Kiski EMS respond to the accident.
