Car shears off pole; crash closes portion of Rt. 228 East

A portion of Route 228 east in Middlesex Township is closed after this car crashed about 8 a.m. Monday shearing off a utility pole and knocking down power lines.

A portion of Route 228 east in Middlesex Township is closed after a car crash about 8 a.m. sheared off a utility pole and knocked down power lines. The road is closed between Sandy Hill and Logan roads while West Penn Power crew responds.

The crash happened when a car traveling west on Route 228 went off the road and slammed into the pole. The car was briefly airborne before ending on the property of a home.

The driver, a man in his 20s or 30s, was injured but he was able to get out of the vehicle. Middlesex Township police found him laying on the ground near his car.

A Quality Ambulance crew tended to him before he was taken to the Butler Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Police said the man would be cited for driving at an unsafe speed.
