Butler County's great daily newspaper

Cool, wet weather may be here all week

Thunderstorms may persist all week, but the National Weather Service believes the weekend will be lovely.

As of Monday night, the NWS of Pittsburgh offered a rather optimistic forecast for the weekend warriors of Butler County.

Meteorologist Jason Frazier said NWS models predict stormy systems will clear up by Friday night.

“We should see drier weather return just in time for the weekend,” Frazier said.

Until then, two cold fronts and a smattering of air pressure “disturbances” promise unpredictability. The first cold front should arrive Tuesday, Frazier explained, prompting several days of scattered thunderstorms. Another comes on Thursday.

The scattered thunderstorms should mostly occur in the afternoon and evening, according to the NWS, because the heating-up of the daylight hours facilitates the storms.

Frazier said not to expect widespread downpours, as precipitation forecasts were mostly low. Rainfall amounts for the week max out at about a half-inch.

However, areas that get well-hit by thunderstorms likely will receive significantly more than the countywide averages. Other areas likely will be free from poor weather. With soil being less saturated, Frazier said his office is expecting less propensity for flooding than in recent months.

Earlier this summer, the region was tracking to beat historic precipitation levels in 2019. Recent weeks have brought those expectations down, Frazier said.

As of Monday night, sunny weather around 80 degrees was forecast for the coming weekend.
