PIAA calls timeout on winter sports

There will be no high school basketball “March Madness.” No gold medals slung around necks in swimming and diving. No throngs of fans cheering on their schools and favorite teams.

At least for the foreseeable future.

The PIAA has gone dark.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced Pennsylvania's athletic governing body to press pause on its winter sports championships or cancel them.

The PIAA board of directors unanimously voted Thursday morning to suspend state basketball and Class AA boys and girls swimming and diving championships for at least two weeks.

The Class AAA swimming finals were canceled and will not be made up.

The impact will be felt by athletes at several Butler County schools.

The Butler boys and the North Catholic boys and girls basketball teams are still alive in the state playoffs after wins Wednesday night.

In Class AAA, seven swimmers saw their seasons — and, in some cases, careers — come to an abrupt end.

In Class AA, 24 swimmers and divers are in limbo, wondering if they will get a chance to compete.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League and the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League also put the brakes on tournaments.

The Seneca Valley hockey team was scheduled to play Peters Township in the PIHL Class AAA semifinals, but that tournament is also on hold for at least two weeks.

The Butler girls bowling team also is in limbo with the PIBL suspending its state tournament indefinitely. The individual championship, which also featured bowlers from Freeport, was also put on hold.
