Fire officials are trying to determine the cause of a blaze early Friday that forced two adults and three children from a Butler home divided into two apartments.

No one was injured, but the three-story house at 108 Second Ave. was left uninhabitable. Neither the owner nor the tenants had insurance, authorities said.

The fire call came in about 4:30 a.m. City police were first on scene with Butler firefighters there in a matter of minutes. By the time fire crews arrived, officials learned that all of the occupants were out safely.

Robert Wargo lived in the first-floor apartment, and Tamara Speed and her children, ages, 6, 14 and 15, lived in the upstairs apartment, which included the attic. Michael Stebbins of Renfrew owns the house.

It appears the fire started in the front of the second-story apartment, said Capt. Kevin McAfee of the Butler Fire Department.

“When we got there,” he said, “there was heavy fire coming out the windows of the second floor, in front of the building.”
