City closes headquarters, playgrounds

In the interest of keeping city residents and visitors safe and healthy, Butler officials have added more components to the state-of-emergency proclamation issued on March 18.

All city parks, playgrounds and recreational facilities are closed immediately with the exception of individuals and groups of five or fewer using city parks to walk, jog, bicycle or pursue a similar recreational activity.

City Councilman Jeff Smith said properties like Memorial, Ritts and Father Marinaro parks will not be blocked off or gated so that such activities can continue.

However, all shelters and playground equipment in the city are closed because the city cannot effectively disinfect it sufficiently in the face of burgeoning virus numbers.

Also, the city building will no longer be accessible to residents. Payments can be made through a slot near the main door, and receipts will be mailed.

Likewise, residents can call the city building to request documents, which then will be mailed.

Cash payment of taxes or other fees will not be accepted until council deems it prudent, Smith said.

Previously, the city building’s foyer was open to residents looking for forms or making tax payments.

Smith said the tight quarters in the foyer could cause the spread of illness.

Regarding enforcement of the closure of playgrounds and public facilities, Smith said signs will be posted and fenced-in areas like basketball courts and the skate park will be locked.

“We would hope people would respect that,” Smith said. “We’re relying on people to be responsible.”

He said the closures will be reversed as soon as it is feasible regarding COVID-19.

“We’re just trying to keep people safe,” Smith said.
