Friday morning car theft leads to chase on Route 8

After a car was reported stolen in Butler Township Friday morning, a Middlesex Township police officer spotted the vehicle and followed it south on Route 8, according to an Allegheny County Police Department news release.

In the Gibsonia area, the officer pulled over the driver of the stolen vehicle, who was a 15-year-old boy. The officer gave the boy instructions from outside the car, but rather than complying the boy drove off, continuing south down Route 8.

The news release states that “the officer fired his weapon approximately four times into the left rear driver's side tire attempting to disable the stolen vehicle.”

That traffic stop occurred at Route 8's intersection with Dickey Road. Officers from the Northern Regional Police Department were approaching as the stop was conducted.

After fleeing the traffic stop, the 15-year-old drove less than a mile more before driving the stolen vehicle into a car holding a 63-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman at Route 8's intersection with Route 910.

The woman and the boy were both transported to a hospital in stable condition.

The stolen vehicle was a silver Kia Forte. It struck a Toyota Highlander.

The theft was reported to Butler Township police at about 9:25 a.m. Friday.
