State creates ZIP code map for COVID-19 cases
As Gov. Tom Wolf announces “data-driven” plans to reopen the state, the Department of Health continues to evolve its collection and publication of COVID-19 statistics.
In the state's Monday coronavirus update, Secretary of Health Rachel Levine said the Department of Health worked with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to create a map breaking down COVID-19 cases by ZIP code. The map is available to the public on the Department of Health's website.
Levine said the information should not be used by individuals to justify disobeying the government's orders to stay at home. She said there have been many cases the state knows about and many they don't know about where people who have the coronavirus exhibit minor or zero symptoms.
“What's important to remember about this information is if there are a lower number of confirmed cases in your ZIP code, it doesn't mean it is safe to resume normal activities, discontinue social distancing and go out without a mask,” Levine said.
According to the map's data on Monday, the three areas where positive cases were the highest were Butler's 16001 ZIP code with 43 cases, 24 cases in the Cranberry Township area and 12 in the Sarver area.
A breakdown of ZIP codes along with full articles about the announcements from Gov. Wolf and Secretary Levine will appear in tomorrow's paper. To see the states ZIP code map here.
