2 rifles stolen during break-in at home
Butler police are investigating the reported theft of two rifles during a break-in at a home in the city's Island neighborhood.
The victim, a 37-year-old man, told police that he returned to his house on the 500 block of Virginia Avenue about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday to find his home had been burglarized. The home was entered after a rear-door window was broken, police said.
The unknown suspect is believed to have reached in through the window and unlocked the door, said Detective Lt. Chad Rensel.
The victim, who rents the home, told police that the burglary happened sometime between 3 p.m. Tuesday and 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Reported stolen were a pair of rifles — a Smith & Wesson M&P15, an AR-15- style semi-automatic; and a Remington Model 770 .308 bolt-action. Also taken was a PS4 video game console and an unspecified amount of money.
Rensel said it did not appear that the home was ransacked. Police have not recovered any surveillance video to aid their investigation.
Any witnesses or anyone with information regarding the burglary are encouraged to call 911 and to ask to speak to Butler police.
