Mars Area Ministerium holds prayer vigil
MARS — About 70 people gathered at the spaceship noon Wednesday at a prayer vigil for racial justice.
Clergy in the Mars Area Ministerium — 12 in all, from the southeastern tract of the county — said prayers, joined in song and discussed racial equality in the United States.
“It was a massive demonstration of the unity of the pastors,” said Rev. Peter de Vries, pastor at Old Union Presbyterian Church in Mars, following the vigil.
Despite concerns voiced at a borough meeting Monday, the vigil was peaceful throughout its entirety. Attendees — who had been sitting on the grass, standing on the sidewalk and watching from across the street — largely left when it ended shortly before 1 p.m.
