Motorcycle-deer accident seriously injures two bikers
PENN TWP — Two people from Harrisville were flown to a Pittsburgh hospital with head and bodily injuries suffered when the motorcycle they were riding struck a deer and guardrail on Route 8 in Penn Township on Monday.
Larry Surrena and Darlene Surrena, both 63, believed to be husband and wife, were traveling south when the accident occurred at 11:47 a.m. near Larchwood Drive, police said.
After the impact, the bike slid 140 feet before hitting a guardrail, said Officer Steve Setnar, of the Penn Township Police Department.
“They sustained head and body injuries from sliding across the ground and impacting the (guardrail),” Setnar said.
Larry Surrena was not wearing a helmet, and Darlene Surrena was wearing a helmet, he said. Both were flown to Allegheny General Hospital.
Darlene Surrena was not breathing after the accident, and bystanders revived her using CPR before ambulances arrived, he said.
They were flown from the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport.
Two witnesses saw the accident, and police found traces of the deer at the scene. Firefighters looked for the deer in a wooded area adjacent to the road, but didn't find it, Setnar said. Penn and Middlesex township police and volunteer firefighters and the Butler Township Volunteer Fire District responded to the accident.
Traffic was restricted to one lane in each direction while the accident was investigated and the scene cleared.
