Mars fire sends 1 person to hospital

The blaze, which started around 10 p.m. on the first floor of the residence, saw heavy flames coming from the three-story building on the 300 block of North Garfield Avenue.

A two-alarm fire Thursday night in Mars sent one man to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The blaze, which started around 10 p.m. on the first floor of the residence, saw heavy flames coming from the three-story building on the 300 block of North Garfield Avenue. The only occupant of the house, a man, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian-Cranberry and later flown to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh with undisclosed injuries.

Adams Area Fire District was the first to respond to the fire, help from local agencies in the SAFER group was quickly requested. Adams Assistant Fire Chief Al Minjock said it took about an hour of heavy work to extinguish the conflagration, but they were on scene for nearly six hours investigating the fire.

Underneath the house is a garage that once served as a commercial operation, Minjock said, and there appeared to be an active vinyl printing shop on or near the scene.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. The state police fire marshal is investigating.
