Cyclists die in separate crashes

A motorcycle crash that killed a 26-year-old West Sunbury man in Clay Township early Saturday was not discovered until more than 10 hours later, investigators said.

A jogger on Route 138, also known as Euclid Road, happened to see the wreckage down an embankment and notified 911 about 10:50 a.m.

Butler County Coroner William Young III subsequently pronounced Keith E. Beatty dead at the scene. Young said authorities believe the crash happened shortly after midnight.

No autopsy was performed. The cause of death is listed as blunt force trauma to the head and chest, and the manner of death is accidental. The results of standard toxicology tests are pending.

Beatty was not wearing a helmet.

State police said it appeared he was traveling east on Route 138, headed toward West Sunbury, when his Harley-Davidson for an unknown reason went off the right side of the road at the intersection with Dingel Road.

The cycle traveled down a 10- to 12-foot embankment and into the woods. Young and Dan Bunyan, chief of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department, both noted that passing motorists could not have seen the wreckage from the road.

Police and emergency crews were notified and closed Route 138 between Helga and Euclid School Road.

Beatty's body was found next to his motorcycle. Fire crews used a Reeves flexible stretcher belonging to the coroner's office to carry the body up the embankment.

A tow truck later arrived and hauled out the cycle. The road was shut down for about two hours.

The crash was the second motorcycle fatality in consecutive days in Butler County.

Arthur C. Amsler II, 72, of Cranberry Township died at Butler Memorial Hospital from injuries suffered about 1:30 p.m. Friday when he crashed his 2015 Harley-Davidson Road Glide into a guardrail on Route 68 in Oakland Township.

State police said he apparently was going around a curve when the cycle went off the right side of the road and into the guardrail. He was thrown off the cycle.

Amsler was not wearing a helmet. A cause for the wreck was not known.
