Creek cleanup canceled

Grass grows through a tire at Porters Cove boat launch in Harmony.

Due to storms late this week and the resulting poor creek conditions, the first Connoquenessing Creek cleanup of 2020 on Saturday, Aug. 29, was canceled.

“The creek has risen an extreme amount and the water is moving swiftly,” said Mike Handley, president of the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance. “It saddens me to have to do so because our volunteers and board members have worked countless hours getting prepared for the August 29 cleanup date.”

The cleanup will not be rescheduled, but the second cleanup of the year will be held as planned on Sept. 12.

Handley said the Alliance welcomes volunteers to help with the mini-cleanups to be announced leading up to the Sept. 12th event. The mini-cleanups will be posted on the Alliance's Facebook page, he said.

The stretch of creek to be cleaned on Sept. 12 is from the Major Washington canoe and kayak launch on Ash Stop Road in Forward Township to the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance launch in Ellwood City, Lawrence County.

The Alliance has removed about 6,000 tires and 550,000 pounds of trash from the creek over its last eight annual cleanup events.
