COVID-19 Update 9/1: Wolf extends disaster declaration

Butler County saw three new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, the same day Gov. Tom Wolf renewed his 90-day disaster declaration.

The county now has a total of 723 confirmed cases of the virus since the beginning of the pandemic while the county's death toll remains at 18.

For the second time, Wolf renewed the disaster declaration he originally signed March 6.

“As we approach the six-month mark of this crisis, I continue to be amazed at the resiliency and strength shown by Pennsylvanians during this pandemic,” said Wolf in a news release.

Wolf also spoke at a news conference Tuesday about the limitations of this power in the area of temporary housing relief.

“As of 12:01 today, unfortunately, the protections I instated to keep Pennsylvanians in their homes have expired, and the legislators have yet to extend these protections,” Wolf said. “That places countless Pennsylvanians and Pennsylvania families at risk of homelessness.”

Also Tuesday, Secretary of the Department of Human Services Teresa Miller and Department of Health Dr. Rachel Levine updated the public on universal baseline COVID-19 testing in all assisted living residences, personal care homes and private intermediate care facilities.

“We know this is just a step in our continuous work to protect vulnerable residence and staff of long term care facilities from COVID-19,” Miller said.
