Leaf collection starts in Butler Twp.
BUTLER TWP — Township residents can put their leaves out for pickup for six weeks beginning Oct. 20.
Leaf collection, which is included in the township contract with Waste Management, will take place from Oct. 20 through the week of Nov. 16, said Tom Knights, township manager, at Monday's township commissioner's meeting.
Leaves must be placed in biodegradable paper bags and placed outside on regular trash collection days.
Bags can be purchased at the township administration building for 40 cents. They can also be purchased at building supply and hardware stores, and online.
In unrelated business, commissioners approved revised job descriptions for the receptionist, office assistant, township secretary and treasurer.
No personnel changes are being made, said Dave Zarnick, commissioners president. He said the descriptions haven't been updated since 2011 and the revisions are mostly changes in terminology.
The commissioners agreed to advertise the sale of four vehicles that are no longer in use. The vehicles include a 1999 and 2000 10-ton dump truck from the street department and two 2017 Ford Explorer police interceptors.
The commissioners appointed Peyton Pry, a junior at Butler Intermediate High School, as the 2020-21 student representative.
She will serve as an ex-officio commissioner from Oct. 19 through the end of the school year and give reports at commissioners meetings.
This is the third year the township has had a student representative.
Commissioner James Lokhaiser Jr. encourages students at Connoquenessing, Northwest and McQuistion elementary schools to participate in the annual Fire Prevention Week poster contest.
Friday is the deadline for submissions, which will be displayed in the administration building next week. The winners in various categories will be announced that commissioners meeting Oct. 19.
