Motorcyclist killed in two-vehicle accident
A motorcyclist died in a two-vehicle collision Sunday evening in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, state police said.
David M. Sedgwick, 43, of Ellwood City, Lawrence County was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck on Route 65 just south of Hogue Road.
Charges are pending against the other driver, Mary J. Dean, 72, of New Castle, police said. She suffered minor injuries.
Police said Sedgwick was driving south on Route 65, also known as Ellwood Road, around 6 p.m. when Dean attempted to make a left turn from a driveway on the west side of the road.
Dean pulled into the cyclist's lane, according to a police report. Sedgwick applied his brakes, but he was unable to avoid colliding with the driver's side of the car. The crash threw him off his Harley-Davidson Electra Glide CVO Ultra Classic.
A helmet was found at the scene, investigators said, but it was not immediately known if Sedgwick was wearing it at the time of the collision, which occurred just several miles from his home.
An autopsy was planned for 3 p.m. Monday, said Lawrence County Coroner Richard Johnson. The preliminary cause of death is blunt force trauma.
An accident reconstruction team is investigating.
