Penguins GM resigns; Patrik Allvin named as interim GM
The Pittsburgh Penguins leadership is changing.
The NHL team announced Wednesday in a media release that Jim Rutherford, the organization's general manager who led the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, has resigned.
The Penguins say Rutherford, who has been the general manager since the 2014-15 season, cited personal reasons for the departure.
As the search for a new general manager begins, Assistant General Manager Patrik Allvin was promoted to interim general manager, according to the release.
“It has been a great honor to serve as general manager of the Penguins, and to hang two more Stanley Cup banners at PPG Paints Arena,” said Rutherford in the release. "The fans here have been tremendous to me and my family. I know it's a little unusual to have this happen during a season, but just felt this was the right time to step away."
This is a breaking news report.
