Mary Cummings
Mary Daum Cummings (Mary Lenore Whitehill) died peacefully Feb. 1, 2021, in Rochester, N.Y., at the age of 91.
She was born April 21, 1929, in Butler, the oldest of four siblings to Mary Doerr Whitehill and George Washington Whitehill.
She graduated from Slippery Rock State Teachers College, and married the love of her life, Theodore Edward Daum, in 1951.
She led an adventurous life with Ted, a naval aviator, and was a great mom to their five kids in homes from Columbus, Ohio, Pensacola, Fla., San Rafael, Calif., San Diego, Calif., Beeville, Texas, Sanford, Fla., to Rota, Spain. When Ted, a Navy commander, died in 1968, Mary returned to Sanford to raise her kids, to whom she had unwavering devotion.
Life then took her to Annapolis, Md., and eventually she reconnected with Larry Cummings at a Butler High School reunion. They married in 1988, and moved to the Front Range. After enjoying Fort Collins, Colo., and Green Valley, Ariz. together, Larry passed away in 2013 and Mary came back east to Canandaigua, N.Y.
She is survived by four of her kids, Michael George Daum, Christopher Paul Daum, Mary Ann Flood and Amy Daum Rosemond; 10 grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; her sister, Georgeann Hitzel; and her brother, Simeon Whitehill.
She was preceded in death by her son, Theodore Edward Daum Jr.; and her brother, Bernard Whitehill.
She had a loving, spirited, and powerful personality and liked her coffee “Black as night, strong as love, and hot as hell!”
