Drive-in concerts an issue for some Center residents

CENTER TOWNSHIP — Center Township supervisors tabled a motion to take action on a new outdoor entertainment ordinance during a meeting Wednesday.

After hearing noise complaints from township residents last year when the Starlight Drive-In began hosting live music concerts, the supervisors began looking for a way to mitigate the issue.

The proposed ordinance would have allowed the township to impose a fine of $100 to $600 on people or businesses that had loud events that did not conclude by 10 p.m.

While the supervisors voted to go back to the drawing board on the ordinance, supervisor chairman Ron Flatt said he does not believe imposing a fine would solve such a problem.

“If the goal of a township is to give relief to the residents, this does not do it,” he said. “This ordinance locks in a solution that is not a solution.”

Several residents spoke at a Monday agenda setting meeting about issues with the drive-in, and several were present Wednesday as well. One resident asked if the township could enforce a noise ordinance against the theater, which the supervisors said was not an option because the township does not have its own police department.

One resident attended Wednesday's meeting and spoke in support of the drive-in theater.

The ordinance may come up at next month's supervisors meeting because Flatt said many people still want action to be taken.

“Several residents were disappointed tonight,” Flatt said.
