Power Plays

CRANBERRY TWP — Larry Stelitano keeps a chart of “mistakes.”

They aren't necessarily errors, but those count, too. They are misplays that should have been made.

His Cranberry Township team had eight of them against West Sunbury in the first game of a doubleheader between the two teams Tuesday evening.

“That's entirely too many,” the Cranberry manager said.

But what makes up for mistakes is raw power, and Cranberry displayed plenty of it in a 10-6 win over West Sunbury in Butler County Area Baseball League action at Graham Park.

Matthew Stanick did a lot of the flexing. The cleanup hitter and center fielder went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer in the third inning and a two-run triple in the sixth.

Sammy Baic also homered an at-bat after Stanick's blast in the third.

“That was Matt's second of the year,” Stelitano said. “That was Sammy's first, but he's played four years in this league and he's hit nine home runs now. It was good to see him hit his first this year.”

The power display helped Cranberry Township (7-1) take the lead for good after falling behind 2-1 in the top of the third.

It also made a winner out of starting pitcher Matt Lewis, who used a sharp-breaking curveball to confound West Sunbury hitters.

Lewis doesn't throw the hardest, but his hook makes his fastball deceptive.

“He knows how to pitch,” Stelitano said of Lewis, a right-hander. “He changes speed and mixes it up. It's not about velocity, it's about command. I have a lot of kids who can throw, but not a lot of kids who can pitch.”

Cranberry took a 1-0 lead on a throwing error in the bottom of the first, but West Sunbury pulled ahead 2-1 in the top of the third, scoring on a balk and a RBI single by Gage Neal, who hasn't played baseball in a year.

Neal went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles for West Sunbury.

“His swing is coming back. He roped a couple,” said West Sunbury manager Matt Williams. “He's just a great athlete.”

Cranberry used its power to take a 5-2 lead, but West Sunbury closed to 5-3 in the fifth and then to 7-6 in the sixth, but could never wrest the lead away.

“We came back a couple different times,” Williams said. “We just needed a few more key hits in a few more situations.”

Brady Thompson got the loss. He struck out five, but was hurt by the two home runs.

“He just left a couple of pitches over the plate,” Williams said. “He pitched well for the most part.”

Two relievers closed out the game for Cranberry. Nick Matthews worked the seventh to close the door.

“He's our closer this season,” Stelitano said. “He's been doing a nice job.”

So has Cranberry Township, which has just one loss and has a deep bench.

“I'm proud of the effort, the team effort,” Stelitano said. “I have 17 kids here tonight. “We had (depth issues) my first year in the league. This is my sixth year now and I'm proud of the program we collectively have built with these boys. They are excited. I have three kids who are in their fourth year in this league. That says a lot about this program, them wanting to come back and continue to play.”
