Wayne Cypher
Lifelong Butler resident Wayne Russell Cypher, 93, went to be with his Lord at 6:40 a.m. June 22, 2021, at Concordia Lutheran Ministries at The Orchard.
Mr. Cypher was born July 24, 1927, in Butler, to Charles Russell Cypher and Clara Imogene (Maharg) Cypher.
He was married on June 29, 1951, to Evelyn Marie (Oesterling) Cypher.
While in high school, he was the bass player in “William Perry's Four O' Clock Orchestra.”
After graduating from Butler High School in 1945, Wayne served as a corporal in the 1103rd Army Air Corps.He was a lifelong rail fan, and he desired to pursue becoming a railroad engineer. He instead entered Penn State University and graduated in 1951, earning his bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He was a surveyor and engineer with Greenough-McMahon for several years, and began working for Armco in 1958 as a mechanical engineer, until his retirement in 1991.Wayne was a talented musician, and enjoyed a wide variety of pastimes, which included railroading, gardening, piano playing, reading and travel.Wayne grew up in the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Butler. After marriage, he and Evelyn attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where he was active in Sunday school as a teacher, superintendent and was on the church council for many years. In later years, they were members of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Hannahstown, where Wayne led Bible studies and acted as a consulting engineer when the new school was built.Mr. Cypher was a member of the Butler County Camp Gideons International for over 50 years. He also was active in the Slippery Rock Bible Conference for several years.He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Evelyn Marie Oesterling Cypher, and their three sons and spouses, Robert and Gina, Wesley and Deanna, and Russell and Mary; his beloved 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.He is also survived by his two brothers, James R. Cypher and Kenneth R. Cypher, and their wives; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.CYPHER — Family and friends of Wayne Russell Cypher, who died Tuesday, June 22, 2021, will be received from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 25, 2021, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E.
