State police are investigating a mass stabbing and officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of the suspect Saturday night in Lawrence County.

The incident happened around 8:44 p.m. on the 3800 block of West Main Street, Mahoning Township, Lawrence County, according to a news release from the New Castle barracks.

Police said they were called around 9:11 p.m. to investigate the stabbing, which resulted in the shooting and death of the alleged assailant, Christopher E. Rush, 34, of New Castle.

“Upon arrival, local police officers encountered (Rush) who was alleged to be responsible for stabbing several victims,” police said.

Those initial victims included a 15-year-old boy; a 61-year-old man from Struthers, Ohio; and a 37-year-old man from Youngstown, Ohio.

A mass stabbing is a single incident in which multiple victims are harmed or killed in an attack involving a knife or other sharp weapon.

“(Rush,) armed with a cutting instrument, proceeded to assault and injure a local police officer with the cutting instrument,” police said. “During the assault, another local police officer discharged his service weapon striking (Rush).”

Rush was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the injured officer was a 24-year-old man, but did not give any further details on the officer's condition or which department he belonged.

Police said their investigation continues.
