George Mallory

George Wolcott Mallory, 98, a resident of Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community in Cranberry Township died on Oct. 27, 2021.

George was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Hankow, China. His parents, Walter Hampton Mallory and Alice Evans Mallory, were living in China at the time while Walter was serving as secretary to the Famine Relief Commission, a group studying the causes of recurrent famine in the country.

George grew up in New York City and was attending Harvard College in the Class of 1944, when his studies were interrupted by World War II. He returned to China from 1943 to 1946 as a member of the U.S. Army.In 1947, he joined the recently organized Central Intelligence Agency as an analyst, specializing in East Asian affairs. For the next 27 years, he served in a variety of posts in Asia and in Washington, D.C.After retiring from the CIA, George and his wife, Jane, moved to Dunkirk/Fredonia, N.Y. George spent the next 30 years raising Concord grapes, restoring several old houses and the Fredonia Opera House, and serving as historian of the Town of Pomfret, N.Y.In 2005, the Mallorys moved to Sherwood Oaks.George was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Woodin Mallory.He is survived by a son, W. Hampton Mallory II (Lauren Scott) of Glenshaw; his grandchildren, Claire (Eric Cline) and Evan (Jancey Rietmulder-Stone); and two great-granddaughters, Juniper and Phoebe.MALLORY — Professional arrangements for George Wolcott Mallory, who died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, were entrusted to Devlin Funeral Home of Cranberry.Please visit www.devlinfuneralhome.com.
