Antique bicycle collectors come together

One of the biggest antique and classic bike swap meets in the country is coming to Butler on Jan. 23.

The annual swap meet returns after being canceled in 2021, and invites lovers and vendors of old bikes to buy and sell their antiques. Howard Gordon, one of the coordinators of the event, said it is popular with collectors, but anyone can find enjoyment in seeing bicycles dating back decades and representing different eras in biking.

“It's like a flea market for bicycles,” Gordon said. “There's a place for the guy with only $100 in his pocket, and there will also be bikes there for $1,000 or so.”

The swap meet will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at Shindigs, 705 Herman Road in Summit Township. Gordon said there still are spots open for vendors who want to sell bikes.

Gordon said there will be bikes on sale made from the early 1900s on. His personal favorite to collect are bikes made from around 1930 to 1950, which have large front wheels and are mostly metallic.

He said he got into collecting bikes through his career in refurbishing and a family history of collecting.

“My dad collected antique cars, and then I started restoring furniture,” Gordon said. “When I got close to retirement, I found an old bike, cleaned it and got interested in it. Now I have close to 100.”

Admission to the event is $3. Gordon said antique bikes can be enjoyed not only by collectors, but also by people who simply enjoy riding bicycles, which is part of the appeal for him and others who normally attend the swap meet.

“It's a hobby,” Gordon said. “I'm looking for bikes to add to my collection, maybe sell some, and put that money back into the hobby.”
