Pitt loses late lead in Peach Bowl
ATLANTA — No. 11 Michigan State scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter — the last coming via a 75-yard interception return with less than a minute remaining — to rally for a 31-21 win over Pittsburgh Thursday night in the Peach Bowl.
The Panthers (11-3) had a 21-10 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Pitt was trying to win 12 games in a season for the first time since 1976.
The Spartans (11-2) entered the game ranked last in the nation in pass defense, allowing an average of 337 yards through the air per game. But Pitt was hampered at quarterback in this bowl outing.
Heisman Trophy candidate Kenny Pickett opted out of the game to prep for the NFL draft and backup Nick Patti left the game with an injury in the first half after throwing just five passes. Davis Beville completed 14 of 18 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers. He ran for a score as well, but threw the critical interception after a Pitt drive reached the Spartans’ 25-yard line.
Jayden Reed caught the go-ahead touchdown pass for the Spartans with 2:51 remaining.
Jalen Nailor caught six passes for 108 yards while quarterback Payton Thorne passed for 354 yards and three touchdowns for Michigan State.
