Saint Gregory goes virtual following COVID cases
Saint Gregory Catholic Elementary School in Zelienople is moving to virtual learning from Tuesday through Friday due to staff members testing positive for COVID-19.
The Catholic school teaches students from pre-school through eighth grade.
“Although we seemed to have conquered the odds and provided in-person learning for over a year and a half through this pandemic, I am afraid that we are not invincible and COVID has finally forced me to make some difficult decisions," Principal Erin Rice said in a letter sent to parents.
Seven staff members have tested positive, according to a release from the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. Rice said she attempted to find substitute teachers but was not able to secure enough teachers to cover the critical need.
Students will pick up school materials on Monday and classes will be virtual for the rest of the week.
“I recognize the hardships this will cause for some of our families. However, I believe that it is the right step to take for the health and safety of our families, employees, and the community at large,” Rice said. “Thank you for your continued patience and support during this evolving situation. Please pray for health and well-being so we can get back together next week.”
“We expect that this month is going to require a great deal of flexibility on the part of everyone,” Michelle Peduto, director of Diocese of Pittsburgh Catholic Schools, said in a release. “We are in continued consultation with local physicians and health agencies. Our goal remains to provide in-person instruction. As always, we are grateful for the patience and support of our school families as we work through these community challenges to provide for the students.”
