Betty White’s memory drives donations to humane society

Amy Fifield’s phone has been blowing up all day with notifications.

While the community has always been generous to the Butler County Humane Society, Fifield, who is its director of community relations, set a $20,000 fundraising goal Monday, for what has been promoted online as the “Betty White Challenge” to honor the late star’s birthday.

“The Betty White Challenge caught on fire on Facebook,” Fifield said. “We saw that all the other local shelters were doing it so we decided to set up a page.”

By 3 p.m. Monday, the humane society was about halfway to its $20,000 fundraising goal. Fifield said that even if the humane society didn’t reach its goal, the money received through the campaign will help the organization, which runs entirely on donations.

One of the humane society’s biggest expenses is caring for the animals at its no-kill shelter, 1015 Evans City Road, Renfrew.

“It’s for the day-to-day care of the animals as well as the medical needs,” Fifield said. “Every animal that comes in needs to be up to date on vaccinations, micro-chipped; they need to be spayed or neutered, screened for viruses and diseases when they come in.”

The humane society has three fundraising pushes a year; one in the spring, the summer and the winter. Fifield said the organization always sees an increase in donations around the Christmas holidays, but they are needed year-round.

“Our community is very, very generous to us,” Fifield said. “That's why we're able to do so much. We are very thankful.”

Donations can always be made electronically to the humane society on its website, butlercountyhs.org.
