Cell phone tower tabled until next meeting

SUMMIT TWP — Supervisors tabled a request Wednesday from Vogue Towers to install a cell phone tower in the township.

Some residents present at the meeting were concerned about the tower using 5G telecommunication, which they said could harm people and animals.

Supervisors chairman Willie Adams said the township would have to approve the building of the tower if it abides by the township’s code. He said the board members will go over information provided by a representative of Vogue Towers, as well as that of residents who disapprove of the installation of the tower, prior to next meeting.

Adams said the supervisors are only evaluating the legality of the installation of a tower in the township, and they may not have jurisdiction over the technology it could eventually be equipped with.

“We want to verify with our solicitor,” Adams said. “If he’s correct and the law states that we’re not allowed to take that into consideration, it will not be able to affect our decision.”

Supervisor Richard Green also said the board may not be able to object to the construction, especially if the structure falls in line with the township’s guidelines.

“We have to make sure that we have the authority to do that,” Green said. “Our authority may be just, ‘This is what it says, and whether we agree or disagree, Vogue Towers has met all the qualifications and we have no authority to do anything other than approve it.’”

The next Summit Township supervisors meeting will be at 6:45 p.m. Feb. 2.
