Clearview Mall stores notified of Tuesday emergency
CENTER TWP — Chris Litzer has worked at Texas Roadhouse at the Clearview Mall for 12 years, and had never experienced a situation similar to what happened Tuesday evening.
At around 6:30 p.m., Litzer, the restaurant’s kitchen manager, got a call from the owner who told him the restaurant should be locked down because police were responding to a nearby shooting.
Police were called to the Rural King at the Clearview Mall that evening for reports of at least one victim with a gunshot wound in the parking lot. Police arrested Carlos Gonzalez Carril, 24, of Butler later than night in relation to the incident. According to charging documents, around 6:30 p.m. Gonzalez Carril fired a gun from his car into another vehicle and wounded three people.
Litzer said he made an announcement to staff and customers during the dinner rush that the front and back doors of the restaurant would be locked as a protection from a potential threat. The announcement was met with cooperation, Litzer said.
“People kept eating their dinner,” Litzer said Wednesday afternoon. “We just kept everybody in the building and everything. I felt pretty safe with the day-in and day-out routine I’m trained for.”
Litzer didn’t fully know the severity of the situation at the time, but he has been through management training, which he said helped keep him calm throughout.
“We are trained to deal with multiple things like people entering the building through the back door,” Litzer said. “We have a certain protocol of backdoor security. I felt prepared.”
A manager at Boscov’s said Tuesday that the police asked the store to lock its doors as well for a time. The manager did not provide further details aside from the store wanting to keep its staff and customers safe throughout the situation.
Management from the Clearview Mall, the Rural King and Altitude Trampoline Park declined to comment on Tuesday’s events.
Litzer said the restaurant reopened its doors to let customers out when he was notified that it was safe. He also said the restaurant closed for the night early because of what happened.
While Litzer said he felt safe inside the restaurant, he added that a shooting happening so close to his place of work is scary.
“It's definitely wild that happened here,” Litzer said.
