Zelienople Area Public Library’s speaker series kicks off Saturday afternoon with a presentation from a children’s book author.

Brittany J. Thurman, who recently released the picture book “Fly,” will present at the first 2022 library presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zelienople library.

Saturday’s event is part of the library’s arts and culture speaker series called “Zelienople Library Presents,” an annual fundraiser for the library.

Thurman’s discussion at the library will include a question-and-answer session, along with a book signing.

Thurman, a Louisville, Ky., native, also wrote and released “Fearless: Boulevard of Dreams,” a middle-grade novel, and will soon publish “Always and Forever,” which is slated for release in 2024. She attended Kingston University in London and received a master of fine arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

Her recently-released “Fly” is about a young girl named Africa who, dreaming of entering a double Dutch jumping rope competition, seeks help from her friends when her brother doubts her chances of success in the competition.

In February, the Zelienople library will also present its second speaker series iteration with Marie Benedict, a novelist whose latest work includes “Her Hidden Genius,” which will be the topic of conversation. Benedict’s prior works include “Other Einstein,” “Carnegie’s Maid” and “The Personal Librarian.”

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $3 for children, and are available in the library or online at zelienoplelibrary.org under the “How to Help” tab and the “fundraisers” drop-down menu option. The library also offers free tickets to the first five interested Seneca Valley School District students.
