Police seeking more information about Slippery Rock shooting

Students said the alleged shooting occurred Friday in The Clubhouse building at the Grove Apartments in Slippery Rock.

Despite one arrest Friday, police are seeking more information about shots fired Friday in Slippery Rock Township.

According to a news release Sunday, police arrived at 9:01 p.m. Friday for a report of multiple shots fired at The Grove Apartments at 145 Harmony Road.

Police said responding troopers conducted a preliminary search and found no one injured and no damage to property.

Police said during the search, troopers encountered a man in the vicinity of the gunshots who “claimed to be in possession of a firearm and stated intent to shoot at troopers.”

Police said they subdued the man, who was found to be unarmed. He was arrested, but no charges have been filed in the incident.

Students Eric Klapper and Lilly Burtch said the alleged shooting took place at the Community Clubhouse on the Apartments property.

“Everyone in the Clubhouse called the police,” Burtch said. “I heard it was a fight between two people.”

“It probably wasn’t a student,” Klapper said. “It’s usually a friend of someone who lives here when things like this happen.”

Student Austin Lundmark said he was in the Clubhouse building at the time, but did not hear any gun shots.

“All the cops were around the building, my roomate’s girlfriend said she heard shots and people were running down the hall,” Lundmark said. “I think they were shooting from the balcony into the air. I heard it was for a music video.”

Police said anyone with information about the shooting should call the state police Butler barracks at 724-282-8100 or the anonymous tip hotline at 1-800-472-8477.

Friday’s shooting becomes the second at the apartment complex within the past year. In March, Anthony D. Retone, 20, of New Castle, was arrested by Slippery Rock police after he allegedly fired a gun inside one of the apartments.

In April, Retone waived his right to a preliminary hearing in the case, and it is now in the Butler Common Pleas Court.

An email to the manager of the Grove Apartments was not immediately returned as of 3 p.m. Monday.
