Pittsburgh man accused of stopping in Cranberry Township to meet underage prostitute

A Pittsburgh man accused of soliciting an underage prostitute who turned out to be undercover officers was arraigned Tuesday morning.

Cranberry Township Police filed charges Thursday against Mark J. Paliotta, 47, of Pittsburgh, including felony unlawful contact with a minor and criminal use of a telephone as well as misdemeanor possessing criminal instruments and patronizing prostitutes.

District Judge Kevin Flaherty arraigned Paliotta on Tuesday and released him on his own recognizance.

According to charging documents, Cranberry Township detectives worked with the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General and Homeland Security Investigations as part of the operation.

The investigating officer said an online ad posted to a prostitution and trafficking website showed images of two undercover officers offering “sexual activities in exchange for money.”

Police said a phone number registered to Paliotta made contact with the phone number listed on the ad. Police said the two agents told Paliotta they were 15-year-old girls and offered sex for $200.

“Paliotta maintained cellular contact with the agents, and at approximately 12:51 a.m. on Nov. 5, Paliotta sent a message to both agents stating, ‘I’m here babe,’” police said.

Police said Paliotta was given a room number of a township hotel and was told two adult prostitutes would vet him before he could meet with the 15-year-old. Upon seeing the undercover agent enter the room, Paliotta initially offered $100 to see them nude, according to police.

Police said Paliotta started acting suspicious, dropped $100 on a table and left the room.

“Paliotta was apprehended in the hallway, and he was found to be in possession of the cellular device used to arrange the meeting, two condoms, an erectile enhancement pill and exactly $200,” police said.

Police said this wasn’t the first time undercover agents had been contacted by Paliotta, and that in April Paliotta had reached out to a person he believed was 15 years old, using the same phone number.

“Paliotta suspected the agents were law enforcement at that time and declared that in messaging with them,” police said. “Paliotta never arrived in the operational area during that time.”

A preliminary hearing for Paliotta is scheduled for March 4 before Flaherty.
