Second man linked to stolen guns found in traffic stop
An arrest warrant has been issued for another man linked to stolen guns found during a traffic stop in Middlesex Township last week.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Charles L. Bassett, 60, of Butler, after Middlesex Township Police filed felony charges of unlicensed carrying of a gun and possessing stolen property.
According to charging documents, Bassett was sitting in the backseat alongside Damian J. Blystone, 19, of Butler, when police stopped the vehicle Jan. 26 for traffic violations.
Blystone had been out on bail from other charges related to a shooting at the Clearview Mall parking lot earlier in January. According to police, Blystone was charged after officers uncovered evidence he threatened the shooter, Carlos Gonzalez Carill, shortly before the shooting.
Blystone and his two friends were shot as a result of the incident and suffered minor injuries. Since his latest arrest, Blystone remains in Butler County Prison without bond.
According to charging documents related to the Jan. 26 traffic stop, as police approached the vehicle, they saw Blystone in the car, and at his feet there was a bag with a gun’s handle sticking out.
Police said Bassett was searched the night of the incident, and nothing was found; however, a juvenile boy was found to have bullets and a magazine in his pockets. Police said Blystone also had bullets in his possession.
Police then matched the serial number of two guns found in the bag to those reported stolen by Penn Township Police. Blystone received charges from both Middlesex Township and Penn Township police departments; however, Bassett has only been charged by the Middlesex Township Police.
Police said they received a search warrant to further look in the vehicle, and they found another stolen gun, a Kimber 9mm pistol. Police said the gun was found under a piece of plastic under the shift column in the center console area.
“The Kimber Micro 9mm had one round in the chamber, and the magazine was loaded,” police said. “A small amount of marijuana was also found in the center console compartment in a plastic bag.”
The charging documents did not note whether the gun was also linked to the Penn Township investigation, which involved four guns. Only two had been found the night of the traffic stop, according to the affidavit.
Upon his arrest, Bassett will be arraigned and scheduled for a preliminary hearing.
