Dorothy J. Barney
Dorothy J. “Dottie” Barney, 87, of Bruin, died following a battle with dementia on Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, at Chicora Medical Center.
She was born on Sept. 4, 1934, in Bruin, the daughter of Elbert John and Kathryn Sara (Kitch) Knox.
Dottie was a resident of Bruin and graduated from Bruin High School in 1952. Prior to her retirement in 1999, she had worked at W.A. Moyer and Sons Level Works in Parker, Waltman's Furniture, and Taylor's Riverside Market.
Dottie was a worshipper of the Lord Jesus Christ and a longtime member of Petrolia Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
She was a hard-working, strong and athletic person who absolutely loved watching sports, especially the Pirates and the Steelers games. She loved her pets, roller-skating, old-time country music and making homemade ice cream with chocolate sauce. Bowling was her favorite activity and she was a longtime member of the Tuesday Morning Women's Bowling League at Bruin Lanes.
Dottie and her husband, Tom, traveled the woods, roads and restaurants of Pennsylvania together for many years. She cherished time spent with her family and was a great mother to her children and caretaker of her aging mother and mother-in-law.
She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Thomas Clyde Barney, whom she married Oct. 9, 1955; son, Walter W. Barney, and Amy Traugott of Petrolia; daughter, Sara Ellenberger, and husband, David, of Karns City; grandchildren, Jarrod and Emily Ellenberger, and Zachary Barney; great-grandson, Layton Barney; twin brother, Donald Knox, and wife, Olive, of Bruin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Kenneth and Austin D. Knox; and a sister, Autho Black.
Barney — Family and friends of Dorothy J. “Dottie” Barney, who died Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 102 Argyle St., Petrolia.
Additional visitation will be held at 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Petrolia Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 107 S. Argyle St., Petrolia, with her son-in-law, David Ellenberger, officiating.
Burial will follow at Bear Creek Cemetery, Fairview Township, Butler County.
