West Sunbury VFD on scene for 7 hours for downed lines
West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department braved the ice and snow for seven hours in response to power lines being down early Friday morning.
According to firefighter Gage Ariss, a call came in a little after 12 a.m. for power lines down at 132 N. Main St. in West Sunbury.
“The lines fell down and were arcing across a motorcycle nearby,” Ariss said. “It was flaring up the motorcycle.”
Electrical arcing occurs when electricity jumps from one connection to another, producing a dangerous flash.
No one was hurt and there was no structural damage to surrounding buildings. Ariss said three firefighters were at the scene for the entire seven hours watching the lines, while other firefighters came and went to keep up with other calls.
“We had 10 people there at one point,” he said.
Ariss said firefighters were at the scene until 7:30 a.m. waiting for the power company to respond.
“We just have to babysit it pretty much until the power company can get there to turn the power off,” Ariss said. “I guess something big was going on in Eau Claire that they had to deal with,” he said.
