MIDDLESEX TWP — A 21-year-old FedEx truck driver was transported to a Pittsburgh hospital for hypothermia after his truck rolled over into a creek on Monday afternoon, police said.

The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. on Deer Creek Road near its intersection with Leslie and Cherry Valley roads.

Sgt. Randy Davison of the Middlesex Township police said the truck was traveling around a bend on Deer Creek Road when its front right tire went off the road. Once the driver brought the truck back onto the road, Davison said the driver over-corrected, swerving to the other side of the road, swerved again and hit a tree. The truck fell on its right side into the creek.

“He expects he was going 35 miles an hour,” Davison said. “He wasn’t wearing a seat belt so he fell into the water. He got out and was sitting on the vehicle when we arrived. He went for a real ride.”

The driver reported no injuries at the time and was transported by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital.

The FedEx vehicle sustained damage to its front end and the motor was submerged in water. Crews on scene worked to stop hazardous waste from traveling from the tributary into Bull Creek.

As a result of the accident, Deer Creek Road was closed for several hours. As the vehicle was being pulled out of the ditch, multiple packages were seen floating in the water.

As first responders were on scene, Davison said another FedEx truck approached the crash and knew the driver who was being transported. That driver informed the company supervisor of the incident.

The FedEx supervisor arrived at the scene. She declined comment on the incident.

In addition to Middlesex Township police, Penn Township police, Quality Ambulance Service, Middlesex Township Volunteer Fire Company and West Deer Township Volunteer Fire Company all responded to the call.
