Man rescued from Wayne Street Viaduct ledge
Butler City Police and the Center for Community Resources teamed up Tuesday afternoon to help rescue a man from the Wayne Street viaduct.
According to police, a call was received at 11:30 a.m. from the center about a man contemplating suicide who had left their building. Chief Bob O’Neill said police weren’t provided with much information on the individual.
“We knew he was in town; we didn’t have too much more,” he said. “When we got to the viaduct, he was already on the ledge.”
According to O’Neill, officers promptly closed the bridge on Wayne Street, and two case workers arrived at the scene to assist police. After 25 minutes of talking to the man, he was able to be assisted over the railing to safety.
The man was taken for psychiatric care without incident, a news release stated.
O’Neill said he hadn’t experienced something like this in his career before. He said there was a wonderful team effort during the situation.
“I’m relieved we were able to help,” he said. “The officers as well as the crisis workers did a fantastic job, and I’m very proud of the job they did.”
