Online training package purchased for sheriff’s office

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office will soon have access to a suite of online training videos that cover a broad variety of topics from use of force to emotional wellness.

The county commissioners approved the purchase of Police One Academy training from Lexipol for $2,949 from June 1 until the end of the year, and $4,954 for 2023.

Sheriff Mike Slupe said the suite is already being utilized and will be free from March through May.

“It’s a good deal and it’s reasonably priced, and you can’t put a price on good training,” Slupe said.

Videos covering 4,000 subjects are available, but all are not necessarily applicable to the department, he said.

The suite covers all functions of law enforcement. Slupe said he hopes some of the training will count toward the 10 hours of annual training deputies are required to receive for Pennsylvania Commission of Crime and Delinquency certification.

“My hope is that a certain block of this training we could record for PCCD certification,” Slupe said.

The videos range in length from five minutes to eight hours. The shorter videos could be played during roll call, and deputies can be assigned to watch longer videos within a certain amount of time. The program documents viewership, he said.

Use of force, room security, arrest techniques, inventory management and clerical training are some of the training subjects. The package includes a session about emotional wellness taught by renowned behavioral scientist and law enforcement Dr. Kevin Gilmartin.

“It’s another training, learning tool for our office. It’s pretty robust,” Slupe said. “It’s something we feel we can use to keep us up to date on a daily or weekly basis that we so chose.”
