Butler Art Center celebrates community in new exhibit

Sculpture, origami, and acrylic and oil paintings will be featured by artists from across Southwestern Pennsylvania at a show opening Thursday at the Butler Art Center, 344 S. Main St.

“This Community is Our Home” is organized by Miss Moraine State, Madison Morrow.

“The goal of the show is trying to create a connection between people after the division we’ve been experiencing,” she said. “I wanted to create a landing place.”

According to board member Shirley McCauley, the theme of community in the show isn’t narrowed to where an artist lives.

“(Morrow) looked at the community not just as where you live, but as in what you’re surrounded by. Maybe it’s your church community, or something part of your identity, maybe your love for horses or dogs,” she said.

Twelve artists are represented in the show, bringing submissions to over 30 pieces.

A reception will begin at 7 p.m. March 12, with an award ceremony taking place at 7:30 p.m.

McCauley said seeing “This Community is Our Home” will support a wider arts community as well as Butler.

“It’s going to be a very talented show. If you donate, you support local art in the southwest region and the local art community,” she said.

Morrow is pursuing a master’s degree at Carnegie Mellon University in art management and is passionate about art advocacy. It’s part of the reason she organized the show.

“It’s advocating for the right to experience and create art,” she said. “It’s something that’s needed in a lot of different spheres. It can help with reform and rehabilitation. There’s prison programs with art, music therapy, support for people with trauma.”

Morrow said people should see the show because it’s a great example of how people aren’t as different as they think.

“To come out and see a show with friends and family, it’s a time to come together when we’ve been apart for so long,” she said. “There’s actually communities we all belong to. We’re a lot more interpersonal than we think.”
